Starters
Starters fill in a new product: text with headings and hints, categories, variants, VAT, vendor and add-ons.
A starter is a starting point for new products. It fills in the text, the categories and the variants when you create a product, and you change what you want.
Where: Products › Starters. The page was called Templates before 24 October 2026. An old link to it opens Starters.
What a starter fills in
| Part | The new product gets |
|---|---|
| Short description | A text to keep, or a hint on what to write there |
| Full description | Headings, text and hints |
| Categories | The categories |
| Option groups | The option groups with their values. One variant per combination is created |
| Add-ons | The product's own add-ons. The new product is added to each add-on's product pages, see Add-ons |
| VAT category | The VAT category. Standard unless you choose another |
| Vendor | The vendor |
A starter holds no prices, tags, pictures or stock.
Attributes are not chosen in the starter. They follow the category through the groups under Products › Attributes, see Attributes. The starter shows which attributes its categories bring, under Attributes.
Add-ons offered by their own rules, for example on every product in Blades, are not chosen in the starter. Under Add-ons the starter shows them: Also offered by rules: Gluing. They are set on each add-on under Products › Add-ons.
Create a starter
- Open Products › Starters.
- Press New starter.
- Fill in Name, for example Blade.
- Write the text. See Hints.
- Choose categories, option groups, add-ons, VAT category and vendor.
- Press Save.
Type a value of an option group and press Enter, for example Anatomic. A value may hold a comma, such as 1,8. × removes a value. The Option groups line shows how many variants the starter makes. A group with values needs a name, and a name is used once. Otherwise nothing is saved and the box says Name every option group once.
If you leave a starter with unsaved changes, the admin asks first: Discard the changes to “Blade”?
Hints
A hint says what to write, for example Plies, carbon and where it sits. It shows as a dashed yellow box with the word Hint.
- In Full description, the Hint button turns the paragraph where the cursor is into a hint. Press Hint again to make it ordinary text.
- At Short description you choose Hint or Text. Hint makes the field's text a hint. Text becomes the new product's short text.
On the new product the hints stay in Description · SEO. The card shows how many are left, for example 3 hints left. Typing in a hint replaces it with what you type. That also goes for a letter typed with a dead key, such as é, and for text from an input method, such as Japanese. Backspace, Delete or Enter in a hint leaves an empty paragraph.
Hints never show in the shop, in Google or in the product feeds.
If you press active while hints are left, the admin asks Make it active? Keep as draft keeps the product a draft. Make active makes it active, and the shop shows it without the hints. The same question comes when you set several products to active in the list.
Save a product as a starter
- Open the product.
- Choose Save as starter… in the ⋯ menu.
- Fill in Starter name.
- Choose how the text comes along under Text.
- Tick what else comes along under Take along.
- Press Save starter.
| Choice under Text | What the starter gets |
|---|---|
| Headings, text as hints | The headings. Each paragraph, list and table becomes a hint. The short text becomes a hint |
| Headings and text | The text as it is, and the short text as text |
Pictures and videos never come along. Option groups come along with their values, never stock or prices. The product is not changed. Open the starter opens the new starter.
Add-ons takes along the add-ons whose product pages name the product. An add-on the product gets by a rule does not come along: a new product gets it by the same rule.
Create a product from a starter
- Press New product under Products.
- Choose a starter under Start from. Empty is the form without a starter.
- Fill in Title, Slug and Default price.
- Change what you want under From the starter · change anything.
- Press Create product.
| Row | What you can change |
|---|---|
| Categories | × removes a category. + Category adds one |
| One row per option group | Untick the values the product does not come in. The Variants row shows how many variants are created |
| VAT · Vendor | VAT category and vendor |
| Add-ons | Remove or add add-ons |
| Text | How many headings and hints the text has. Preview shows the text |
| Follow … | The attributes the categories bring. They are changed under Products › Attributes |
The product is created as a draft and opens. The variants get the product's price, no SKU and no stock. At most 100 variants are created at once. If categories, variants or add-ons did not come across, the list says what is missing, and the product stays as a draft. An add-on whose product pages need all of several rules is not changed. The list names it, and you add the product there by hand.
Change and delete
Save saves the starter. Delete removes it after the question Delete the starter “Blade”?
A starter is used only when a product is created. Changing or deleting a starter changes no products, not even the ones created from it.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | 1–120 characters. Two starters in the same workspace cannot have the same name |
| Short description | Max 600 characters, as text or hint |
| Option groups | Max 10 groups |
| Variants per new product | Max 100 |
Starters apply to the whole workspace, like the products.
The group Templates in the designer is something else: Product page, Collection pages and Text pages set how those pages look in the shop, see Page templates.
