Variants and option groups
Build variants from option groups such as Size and Colour, generate the combinations and choose how the customer picks.
A variant is a version of the product, with its own SKU, price, weight and stock. Here you build the variants.
Where: Products › [product], the Variants card.
What a variant has
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Title | The name in the storefront, for example "S / Black" |
| SKU | The article number. Needed for the ProSmart sync |
| Price | The variant's price in the base currency. Empty = the product's price |
| Stock, Stock mode, Preorder days | Stock, the stock mode (Automatic, In stock (manual), Preorder, Out of stock) and preorder, see Stock |
| Weight (g), Length (cm), Width (cm), Height (cm) | Shipping. Empty = the product's values |
A variant always inherits the VAT category from the product. A product without variants sells as it is, without a stock count.
+ Add variant adds one variant at a time. Delete variant in the variant form asks Delete “S / Black”? and then deletes the variant.
Build variants from groups
- Press Option groups.
- Type the group's name, for example Size.
- Type a value and press Enter, for example S. Do the same for M and L. A value may hold a comma, such as 1,8. × removes a value.
- Press + Group for the next group, for example Colour: Black, Red, Blue.
- Press Save groups.
- Press Generate on the line "N combinations missing".
Generate creates a variant for each missing combination. The title becomes, for example, "S / Black". The SKU is empty, the price comes from the product and the stock is 0. Fill in SKU, price and stock per row.
The customer picks in the order of the groups.
A starter can fill in the option groups of a new product, and the variants are created with the product. See Starters.
Rows that do not fit
BunStack matches variants that already exist on their values and keeps them. A variant that fits no combination gets the badge no match. The line "N variants match no option" has the button Remove. It asks you to confirm and then deletes the variants with their stock and SKU.
How the customer picks
Storefront picker in the same panel controls the storefront:
| Choice | The storefront shows |
|---|---|
| Separate pickers (Colour · Size) | One picker per group. Sold-out combinations are dimmed |
| One combined list (S · Black) | One list of all combinations. Sold-out ones read "– sold out" |
A group named Color, Colour, Färg, Farge, Farve or Väri shows as colour swatches. That needs every value to be a known colour name or a hex code. Otherwise text buttons show.
A group name without spaces, with hyphens or underscores between the words, shows with spaces. Number-of-balls from an import reads Number of balls above the picker. The saved name does not change.
The product page opens on the first variant that can be bought. An address with ?variant=<id> opens the page on that variant when it can be bought. The feed's links include it, see Product feeds for Google and Meta.
Renaming
If you rename a group or a value and save, BunStack updates every variant that uses it. It also works out again the titles it set.
To rename a value: remove it with ×, type the new one and press Save groups. The variants with the old value get the new one. The line above Save groups shows what is renamed, for example Save groups renames on the variants: 1,8 → 1,9. Changing the order, or only adding or removing values, renames nothing. If a removed value should not become the new one, save between the steps.
A group with values needs a name, and a name is used once. Otherwise nothing is saved and the card says Name every option group once.
For products that had variants before option groups existed, BunStack filled in the groups from the variants' titles.
